Why Retire at Lake Chapala?

With over a million Americans and 500,000 Canadians living in Mexico, it’s clear this is a great place to retire. Mexico offers a much lower cost of living than Canada or the U.S., and it’s close enough to make visiting family easy. You can take several trips a year to see your grandkids, and stay in touch through Skype. Plus, there’s a service here that offers phone, internet, cable, and free unlimited calls to Canada, the U.S., and within Mexico for just 670 pesos—about $46 USD!

Affordable Living!!

Living in Mexico generally costs 40-50% less than in Canada or the U.S., which is a big relief for retirees and those on fixed incomes. It’s also a great option for those wanting to retire earlier, and I’m seeing more younger people exploring the area. If you own your home, you can live comfortably on about $1,200 a month, excluding travel. Add $500 for a partner. Renting costs vary, with simple apartments around $350 USD, mid-range homes at $600-$750, and anything higher being more luxurious.

Perfect Weather!!

National Geographic named it the second-best climate in the world, with spring-like weather all year. You won’t need heating or air conditioning, and you can enjoy outdoor activities like swimming, biking, hiking, and golf any time. In Mexico, there’s plenty of sunshine, and our seniors stay active and look younger than those in colder climates. The pleasant weather makes it easy to meet new people, whether you’re walking around or chatting with others at a restaurant.

Health Care!!

Health care is a top concern for seniors, and Mexico offers excellent options. Many ex-pats choose IMSS, the national health program, costing around $350 USD, while others opt for private insurance, which provides immediate care without waiting periods. For example, my private insurance at age 63 costs about $1,300 USD a year with a $5,000 deductible. You can also pay as you go, with doctor visits costing between $18 and $42 USD. Mexican doctors often provide more personalized care, and my experience, including emergency surgery in Guadalajara, has been excellent.

Safety at Lake Chapala!!

Media often highlights isolated incidents of violence in Mexico, which can create a misleading impression of danger. In reality, Mexico is statistically safer than the U.S., with most crime being drug-related and not affecting tourists. For instance, out of nearly 8 million tourists last year, only 111 U.S. citizens were killed, many involved in illegal activities. This is similar to murder rates in places like Orlando. Cities in the U.S. have much higher crime rates, yet they don’t receive the same scrutiny. Many people who visit Lake Chapala are surprised by how safe and peaceful the area is, despite the negative media coverage.

Immigration Requirements for Living in Mexico

Most people living in Mexico are retirees who need to prove they can afford to live comfortably without relying on the country. For a Residente Temporal (temporary resident), you need a bank statement showing $25,164 USD ($336,450 MXN) in balance for one year, or $1,510 USD ($20,187 MXN) per month in deposits, or real estate worth $207,050 USD ($2,691,600 MXN) with notary proof. For a Residente Permanente (permanent resident), you need a bank statement showing $100,658 USD ($1,345,800 MXN) in balance for one year, or $2,588 USD ($33,645 MXN) per month in deposits. Some offices may reduce these requirements if you own property in Mexico, and immediate family members can qualify for permanent residency through the Vinculo Familiar program if one family member obtains it. Immigration specialists can assist with the process for a fee ranging from $50 to $450 USD, and I can recommend the best ones.
